“Laurie Cabot”

Laurie Cabot The “Official” of Bullshit.

In 1977 it was claimed the Governor of Massachusetts had given Laurie Cabot her Official Witch Status.  Unless you the reader have a shoe size IQ know this is not "Official" of anything especially when it comes to our constitution. Where Dukakis who ran for president was confronted with by christian groups.   If Government officials ordained people official this or that under their religion well how many "official" attention whores do you think will spring up ? But as they say if many people believe a lie it becomes the truth unchallenged.    NOW  if I was the Official Satanists of Salem I would have that cert framed and posted up high for all to see . Yet from what I hear anyways is the only cert she got from the Governor was recognition for working with deaf children.

Tid bit here > "

Terry Bergman, speaking from the Dukakis headquarters, compared the Paul Revere Citation to “making someone a Kentucky Colonel,” and emphasized the humorous nature of the award. “I can’t tell you how lighthearted it really is. It’s a joke up there (in Salem),” she said. Bergman also attempted to defend Cabot and downplayed her involvement in witchcraft: “She’s a good witch. She’s not into satanism or anything.” The National Geographic report, however, described a ritual led by Cabot in which a coven of her followers called upon the ancient Egyptian goddess Isis. She was also described as being involved in group chanting and displays of psychic power.

Bergman also emphasized that Dukakis has no sympathetic ties to Cabot: “Governor Dukakis doesn’t believe in witches. He doesn’t even believe in astrology.”

Another spokesperson at the Salem Chamber of Commerce defended Cabot, but denied that she was state-appointed. Her position as “official Witch of Salem,” according to the employee, is a role that has simply been accepted by the community. “She’s very popular and a very nice person,”........"

Cabot witch

Laurie Cabot, Power of the Witch

The self-professed “Official Witch of Salem” (despite the fact that there are hundreds of witches in Salem), this woman is just begging for attention. She wanders Salem, Massachusetts on a day-to-day basis in a long black robe, which she claims is traditional Wiccan garb, back from before the Burning Times. She’s another big believer in quick fix magic (all you need for a good parking space is to visualize it before you enter the lot). Oh, and did I mention she named her Tradition after herself? Where Ravenwolf has exploited Wicca for money, Cabot has exploited it for attention.

For more of Cabot’s antics, check out the following news article from June 18, 2004:

Police claim Salem’s official witch put a hex on them as the result of a custody dispute.

Video David Boeri Reports On Hex NewsCenter 5’s David Boeri reported that it started with a child custody dispute, a judge’s warrant for a child’s return and the arrest of the daughter of Laurie Cabot, the official witch of Salem. When Cabot didn’t open the door for police, they entered on their own.

“I’m talking to them and they are, like, doing their business, and, you know, ‘I got a warrant,’ you know? I said, ‘Stop, you are not paying attention. Look me in the eye,'” said Cabot. “I didn’t say for life. I said, ‘Look me in the eye. You are cursed.’ I meant it. They were nervous.”

Cabot, who’s said she has spent her career as a “Dale Carnegie of Witches,” was coming off as the Wicked Witch of the East Friday, appearing in a Salem newspaper with the headlines: “Hex and the City: Witch Curses Salem Cops.”

“I don’t do curses. I say it is a curse when you do bad things,” said Cabot.

The police, whose station was still upright Friday, may know the laws of the commonwealth, Cabot said, but they don’t know the universal law of witches.

“We call it the ‘Threefold Law.’ Whatever you do comes back threefold. You curse yourself by doing things against human kind,” she said.

Police said they were only doing their jobs, but did not comment Friday.

No criminal charges were filed in the case.

Sorry Ms. Cabot, but when police enter a home with a valid warrant, it is not a crime “against human kind”. It’s their bloody job.

Hex in the city: Witch curses Salem cops

By Tom Dalton

Staff write

SALEM - This could only happen in the "Witch City." Laurie Cabot, the
official witch of Salem, has placed a curse on Salem police.

While two officers were carrying out a court order Wednesday night, an
angry Cabot put a hex on Sgt. James Walker, a patrol supervisor.

"Look me in the eyes," Cabot said, according to police. "You are cursed
for life." Cabot then tried to place the same curse on Patrolman Timothy
Salvo, police said, but he wouldn't look her in the eyes.

"He's a more veteran officer," said Police Chief Robert St. Pierre.

Cabot did, however, place a general curse on all the law enforcement
officers who came to her Essex Street apartment, a group that included
two Essex County deputy sheriffs. "The rest of you are cursed, too," she
said.

Although Salem police have been cussed before, this is believed to be
the first time they were cursed. No charges were filed against Cabot.

When contacted yesterday, Cabot did not deny the incident. She said she
did it to protect a grandson who was being returned by court order to
the custody of his father.

"I've never done a curse before, but they broke into my house and took
my grandson ..." she said. "They were going to get whatever they deserve
for doing that, because it's morally wrong and I have to protect my home
and family."

Until now, witches and law enforcement officers have gotten along fairly
well in this city. There was the notable exception, of course, of the
Salem Witch Trials of 1692, when 20 women and men falsely accused of
witchcraft were put to death.

In memory of that tragic event, police officers wear arm patches with
the silhouette of a witch on a broom, and drive patrol cars with a witch
painted on the side.

Even Cabot, whom Gov. Michael Dukakis named the "official witch" of
Salem in 1975, has had a good relationship with police. She worked with
Salem police on a noted murder case a decade ago, although there are
varying accounts of her involvement and of the official nature of her
role. Cabot rattled off police departments across North America --
Hawaii, Chicago, Kansas, New York and Canada -- which she says she has
aided over the years.

As far as the curse goes, Cabot said: "I don't know what will happen.
.... Whatever befalls them is what they deserve."

As for Walker, he was back on the job yesterday.

"He got out of bed this morning," said Capt. Rodney Comeau, "and he was
fine."

If Cabot's recent track record is any measure, police may be in the clear.

Last year, she tried to remove the "Curse of the Bambino" from the Red
Sox by placing a bottle in her Pickering Wharf shop with herbs and
crystals inside and photos of Babe Ruth and Ted Williams taped outside.

We all know how that worked out.

Cabot, Laurie

Common Name: Laurie Cobalt

Name: Mercedes Elizabeth Kearsey

No information on when she changed her name, but sustains that she is a relative on her paternal side to Jersey Witches which held the last name Cabot.

Born: March 6 1933 Weewoka, Oklahoma

Cabot claims her interest in the occult started from about 5 or 6 years old. She suggests having psychic and medium abilities. These interests were said to have been developed as a teen and she received a formal initiation at 16.

Her house religion isn't stated anywhere and there seem to be no repercussions to her choice. She lived with her mother and they moved often, it's unclear if her father was also constantly present or not. There don't seem to have been bad repercussions for her choice, she seems to have been expected to "Grow out of her interests" though it's obvious she hasn't.

Her life Line:

*2004 Local police officer claims that she cursed him while the police came to take Jody Cabot's son after a custody dispute. Cabot sustains that she told him that people who do evil things are cursed, and that witchcraft should never be used for evil.

2006 W.L.P.A. changed its name to "Project Witches Protection"

At some point she founded the Cabot Science Tradition and gives lessons today Witchcraft I and II are taught by her and her daughter Jody, I havn't seen Penny mentioned often. She also offers a year and a day training into witchcraft. But I have not found the founding dates of these. Though it's said she's been teaching witchcraft as a college course since she moved to Salem.

*Myths and Legends

The dates marked with *'s are marked because they accuracy questionable, little information can be found on them and Rev. Cabot denies them. There is a newspaper photocopy available of the police saying Cabot tried to curse him, but she denies the charge.

Surrounding Laurie Cabot there has and there probably always will be a lot of controversy, not only from Christians but also from her fellow pagans. She is wild and exuberant, she doesn't bat an eye at charging for her services, and she isn't even slightly modest about wearing her robes and heavy make up, some call her a Goth, others a Lime-Light Addict. But There's really only one thing I'm sure of: one way or another she was one of the founders of the Pagan religions or tradtions as we know them today. She opened Paganism and Witchcraft to the public and took all the scratches and bruises for it. She made the path with the help of precious few others.
For the sake of a freedom of expression, I would let her act how she likes. She's no where near perfect, and she is making money from religious beliefs which can be looked down on, but it is after all her life, her profession, and her specializaion; she has not only been studying and teaching for a majority of her life; she has been actively rasing awareness and fighting for the rights of pagans all across the USA. This woman has selflessly given to her peers and to charity I must underline that this act of generosity is not kept for her alone- a part of the classes offers is encouraging volonteering locally. She doesn't have my love but my god if she doesn't have my respect.

Note: Oct 2013- I have come back to correct some of these horrible misspellings and to prepare for a good bye; I should remove some of those ambiguous passive tenses because they really make me sound snobby. I can't believe that when I wrote this I retained the use of passive and reported speech made me sound impartial. XD. Ah to be that young again!

Salem Official Witch?

The Forerunner

Dukakis' Official Witch?

By Editorial Staff
Published October 1, 1988

By Lee Grady

Rumors about a “state-appointed witch” linked to Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis have spread rapidly around the U.S. since the Democratic nominee began his campaign this year. To clear up the matter, The Forerunner did some extensive research and uncovered several disturbing facts.

The news about about Laurie Cabot – called the “official witch of Salem, Massachusetts” – was published by National Geographic in April, 1979. The magazine described her as a descendant of a well-known Massachusetts family. According to the article: “Ten years ago (1969) she felt drawn to Salem from her home on the West Coast. Shortly after settling in the town, she announced herself to the mayor as a witch. Since then Laurie Cabot has made a living lecturing on witchcraft and selling herbs, astrological charts, and magic mirrors.”

In 1979, there were 350 witches in the Salem area. An employee at the Crow Haven Corner, Cabot’s store, told us that this number has now grown to 2,000. She also stated that Cabot has launched a new organization, the Witches’ League for Public Awareness, which is attempting to link witches together from all over the nation.
One spokesperson for the Salem Chamber of Commerce confirmed the statements made by National Geographic, agreeing that she was the official, state-designated witch of Salem. However, press aides at the Dukakis campaign headquarters in Boston denied the allegations. The first aide reported that Cabot had actually only received what is known as a Paul Revere Citation – which he described as a “humorous,” unofficial commendation awarded to outstanding Massachusetts citizens. Cabot had been recommended for this certificate by a state legislator from her district. “The Governor did not even sign it,” he added, saying that the citation only bears a facsimile signature by Dukakis.

The Dukakis-Bentson camp is concerned about the rumor. One spokesman admitted that he receives “two or three calls a day” on the matter. He also suggested that the city of Salem capitalizes on the “officiality” of Cabot because it draws tourism to the area. Each October, for example, the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a month of so-called “Haunted Happenings,” that last until Halloween. In the past, that celebration has included a public seance. Salem has been historically linked to witchcraft since the late 1600s because of the Salem Witch Trials.

“She’s very popular and a very nice person,” she stated. Cabot is reported to be a noteworthy citizen because of all the beneficial things she has done for the community. One Dukakis aide claimed that Cabot was given the citation for her work with dyslexic children, and not for her role as a witch. However, Salem Chamber of Commerce spokesmen were unaware of such a claim.

In fact, an employee of Cabot’s store in Salem did not even know about the supposed services available for dyslexic children. “If we do that,” the woman said, “you can find out about it by writing the Witches’ League for Public Awareness.” Apparently any “community service” that Laurie Cabot is offering has been in obvious connection to her witchcraft.

A city official, who wished to remain anonymous, set the record straight by researching the records of City Council meetings. According to those notes, Laurie Cabot came to the mayor of Salem and requested that she be made the official city witch and “greeter.” The Council discussed the issue, and in April of 1977 released a statement that they did not want “any person or spirit” to be the official witch of Salem. A letter was even sent to the office of Governor Dukakis in Boston to express the decision of the City Council.

However, Cabot bypassed the council decision and, with the help of a state representative, Elaine Noble, went directly to the governor. Although it is still unclear as to what exactly went on in that meeting, Massachusetts newspapers the next morning announced that Cabot had been named the “official” witch. Salem Evening News, on April 28, 1977, ran a news article with the headline, “Governor Dukakis Unwittingly Gives ‘Witch’ Her Wish.” The story stated: “This week Ms. Cabot apparently worked her magic on Governor Dukakis, and he unwittingly did for Ms. Cabot what Salem mayors and councils have refused repeatedly.”

There is still some confusion about whether the Paul Revere Citation was the document that gave Cabot this official status, or whether Dukakis simply told Cabot she had the office. Rev. Russel Ely, pastor of the Salem Christian Assembly, confirmed that this has been a mystery. He did cite, however, an article from the popular Yankee magazine (October 1986) which ran a story called “Why Salem Is in Love with Witches.” That article, in describing the meeting between Dukakis and Cabot, seemed to suggest that an appointment had been made in addition to the citation. Said the report: “The petition (to make Cabot official) found its way to Governor Michael Dukakis, who, against the wishes of Salem’s mayor at the time, appointed Cabot Salem’s official witch and gave her a citation to boot.”

Pastor Ely, who has had numerous confrontations with Cabot and other witches in Salem, said the matter needs to be clarified. “In my estimation,” he said, “Dukakis needs to make this clear. But he has just ignored it.” Ely confirmed that Salem, a city of 38,000 people, does have approximately 2,000 practicing witches.

“Laurie Cabot is serious about her witchcraft,” added Ely. “She’s also a serious businesswoman. In fact, she tells people that she is ‘the American dream’ because of her financial success.” Cabot is very well-known across the nation, and has been featured on television talk shows including “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Good Morning America.”

Given all of these facts, it still may not be totally clear how aware Michael Dukakis is about Laurie Cabot, or how far he went to make her an official witch. We should be alarmed about the spiritual forces at work in Massachusetts – which have, no doubt, been manipulating this campaign. The Church in America, while praying for the upcoming election, should make it a point to bind the powers of witchcraft that seem to be headquartered in the city of Salem.

Witchcraft and Politics: An "Official" State Witch?

Published October 1, 1988

During the 1988 presidential campaign, Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis was accused by Christians in the Republican Party of having appointed an “official state witch” while he was governor of Massachusetts. The Dukakis camp categorically denied these charges.

Did Michael Dukakis appoint an “official witch” of Massachusetts? One spokesperson for the Salem Chamber of Commerce confirmed the allegations, agreeing that Cabot was the official, state-designated witch of Salem. The city of Salem capitalizes on the “officiality” of Cabot because it draws tourism to the area.
